Community Service

I try to be involved in social justice and community service when I can. Sometimes that means being a quiet activist, signing petitions, donating goods, and tweeting about causes that mean something to me. But as often as possible, I do things in person. Here are some of those things:

  • During the 2010-2011 school year, I was lucky enough to volunteer as a mentor in the Owl and Panther Project, a Tucson-based arts therapy program for refugees and their families. I worked primarily with the teens and tweens.
  • Since fall of 2011, I have volunteered with 826 Boston, a chapter of a national non-profit that offers after-school and weekend tutoring for K-12 students and also provides in-school volunteers, fun workshops, and field trips dedicated to fostering a love of reading and writing in young people.
  • I love working with programs and organizations that support literacy and love of reading. That's why I've volunteered before at the Tucson Festival of Books and at Story Town, an annual festival put on by Make Way for Books, a Tucson non-profit.
  • I have been a regular Red Cross blood donor since 2006. Since it's nearly painless and only takes an hour of my time, it seems like the least I can do for the world when I'm too busy to do something more substantial.
